Numerous European users of Xiaomi Aqara currently report on reddit that they can no longer use the devices via the corresponding app. According to the displayed notice, the reason is the basic data protection regulation.
Actually, the manufacturer has long wanted to launch a European version on the market. But all impatients have probably already struck at a Chinese online retailer. If those of you have changed the region in the app to Europe, you will now be greeted with the following hint, which won't let you use the devices via the app anymore.
"Dear users, Aqara Home app has suspended the data service in the European Union regions for GDPR compliance. You can use our product via Mi Home or HomeKit Mode of Aqara Home."
But before panic breaks out, the advantage of HomeKit over other smart home platforms is that devices must function independently of the manufacturer. So as long as you have the HomeKit code, HomeKit devices should still be able to be added and controlled.
However, future firmware updates of Aqara bridge can no longer be installed. You can also download the Mi Home App, create a new account and leave the region on China.
Either way the case shows that cheap is not always good. In order to avoid such a case, you should rely on manufacturers who will not leave you out in the rain on the one hand and on the other hand can provide reasonable support in an emergency.
In the very best case you can rely on pure HomeKit devices, which also do not rely on a manufacturer cloud. Because then you can be sure that your data won't leave your house unencrypted and that you can continue to use the devices as long as they are technically working.
